Local 2 Takes to the Streets

Monday, August 17, 2009 : It was a veritable march last Friday, starting from Local 2 Plaza, between Marriott Hotel and the Four Season Hotel, down Market street, right on the 5th street by the Parc 55, left on Ellis surrounding the giant Hilton, up Powell by the St. Francis, and ending at the Grand Hyatt Plaza by the Bronze Fountain, where the finale was a thunderous “We'll be back, We'll be back.”
The event started at about 4:30 p.m. when a massive crowd gathered like a heavy cloud that sunk to the ground. Local 2 President Mike Casey warmed the people up with chants, then introduced the venerable Francisco Herrera who sung to the guitar some beautiful union lyrics. A Franciscan father in his brown habit spoke of justice for the workers and of the inspiration of Obama by Cesar Chavez when he chose his "Yes, We Can." The friar has just come from Japan where he commemorated the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
