Story of Wrongfully-Convicted Prisoner Jailed by Sotomayor Excluded from Confirmation Hearings
Tuesday, July 14, 2009 :We speak to Jeffrey Deskovic, a wrongfully-convicted prisoner who spent 16 years in prison until DNA evidence proved his innocence. In 1997 -- nine years before his eventual release -- he appealed his conviction to Judge Sonia Sotomayor and the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals. The court dismissed his appeal without even considering his innocence claim in part because of a technicality - paperwork from his lawyer had arrived at the courthouse four days late.
Jeffrey Deskovic joins us in the Firehouse studio. He recently wrote about Sonia Sotomayor for Alternet.org. The piece was titled “Judge Sonia Sotomayor Denied My Appeal and I Spent 16 Years in Prison For a Crime I Didn’t Commit.”
Jeffrey Deskovic, released from prison in 2006 after spending 16 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit. In 1997, Jeff appealed his case to the Second Circuit, only to be denied by Judge Sotomayor on a technicality. His latest piece on Alternet is Judge Sonia Sotomayor Denied My Appeal and I spent 16 years in prison for a crime I didn’t Commit.
