U.S. guns, difficult to track, illegally funneled to Mexico by cops and others

by sensible gun laws now!
Federal agents are currently working on tracking down the source of the thousands of US weapons that end up in the hands of criminal cartels in Mexico. Mexico asked for this help after realizing that most guns turning up in crimes in Mexico are coming from Texas, Arizona, and California. The agents can't track guns via a database due to gun-nut paranoia written into US law, so they have to manually go to gun shops and review records for suspicious purchases. When the agents find suspicious records, they then have to go out and do field interviews to determine the true nature of the gun purchases. With the giant flood of guns sold in the US, and the tedious and inefficient methods agents are legally bound to use in tracking down those who have purchased these weapons, it is apparently very easy to sell all sorts of guns to criminals in Mexico. The following is a snippet from a corporate report on a police officer in Texas who is selling guns for profit in Mexico. If he, or anyone, will ever be held accountable for contributing to murder and other crimes south of the border is doubtful, so the guns keep flowing and the bodies keep piling up.

Federal agents hunt for guns, Houston Chronicle, June 30, 2009

Some stories, [agents] say, are hard to believe.

The lamest so far came from a police officer: He said he bought a few military-style rifles, left them in his car and — on the same night — forgot to lock a door. He couldn’t explain why he didn’t file a police report or why he visited Mexico the day after the alleged theft.
