"FOX40 News obtained heights and weights for nearly every officer at the Sacramento Police and Sacramento County Sheriff's departments. Using standard measurements, we calculated their body mass index or BMI. We were shocked at the findings.

FOX40 News obtained heights and weights for nearly every officer at the Sacramento Police and Sacramento County Sheriff's departments. Using standard measurements, we calculated their body mass index or BMI. We were shocked at the findings.

Sixteen percent of more than 1,000 Sacramento County deputies and thirteen percent of the over 550 Sacramento Police offcers were either obese or morbidly obese.

"There's no requirement that you have to be in a certain physical shape as a condition of employment," Sacramento Police spokesperson Konrad von Schoech said. He tells FOX40 News that Sacramento Police officers will soon GET PAID TO WORK OUT at least twice a week, but there's no requirement for them to do so.

I wouldn't use BMI as a way of assessing fitness or obesity. Many male athletes who do weight training have high weight to height ratios, and Tom Cruise is supposedly at the edge of obesity. The criteria does work for most body types, but fails for heavyset types. Maybe fitness criteria of running or agility would be the way to go. Morbid obesity also is a problem
