Field Poll Shows 56% of California Voters Favor Legalizing Marijuana for Recreational Use
California was the first state to make cannabis illegal and may be the first to end marijuana prohibition. In February, California Assemblymember Tom Ammiano introduced Assembly Bill 390, the Marijuana Control, Regulation, and Education Act. CA 390 would legalize, tax, and regulate marijuana for adults over 21. A new Field Poll, released today, shows that 56% of California voters favor legalizing marijuana for recreational use and taxing it.
Californians understand the economic benefits of ending a policy that has wasted billions in taxpayer money and imprisoned millions of otherwise law-abiding, contributing Americans. AB 390 would create jobs, generate $1.2 billion in new direct tax revenue, reduce crime, reduce prison overcrowding, cut funding to drug cartels, reduce police corruption, and protect our public lands. It would also legalize industrial hemp production.
To get this bill passed, the 56% of Californians who support it must speak up. Lawmakers will vote for AB 390 if they hear from enough of their constituents.
