Oakland Residents Form Chapter of “Copwatch" in Wake of Oscar Grant Murder
News Conference to be Held at Site of Police Killing

Oakland, CA -- A group of Oakland residents and community organizations will hold a press conference on Tuesday, April 28 at Noon at the Fruitvale BART station to announce the formation of Oakland Copwatch. The group will monitor and document police activity to end police caused assaults and deaths in Oakland. Members of Oakland Copwatch began organizing after the killing of Oscar Grant III by BART police on January 1, 2009.

What: News conference to announce launch of Oakland Copwatch

When: Tuesday, April 28 at Noon

Where: Fruitvale BART station entrance

Who: Copwatch representatives, Oakland residents and community organizations, friends and family of victims of police violence

“How many police caused murders of unarmed community members can we tolerate?” asked Kelley Abraham, a member of the newly formed Oakland Copwatch. “Police should be accountable to the community and held responsible for their abuses of power. Oakland residents should not have to fear them.”

Oakland Copwatch joins a movement of dozens of chapters serving communities across the country, including Berkeley, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Phoenix, Boston and Portland.

Copwatch chapters have helped to mitigate violent behavior by police and increase safety for those who choose to assert their rights.
