The Bio-Nano-Info Tech Revolution

article/letter to the chancellor of ucsc and members of the UC Santa Cruz community urging the need to build an EARTH Center at UC Santa Cruz.
To: University of California Santa Cruz/UCSC Extension:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your Bio-Nano-Info Revolution was a BIG mistake people.
UC Extension and UCSC are now 10 years behind in the fight to SAVE THE PLANET.

The University SHOULD have built an EARTH CENTER, at what is now the Baskin Engineering building, to help tackle the planet's global environmental problems- of which
the threat of Global Climate Change takes top slot. Whether you understand it or not, Global Warming is the #1 international security threat to Mankind and the Planet today.

In collusion with Bush's ultra right wing fascist administration over the past 8 years, you have, as an institition (collectively and corporately), GONE FORWARD IN FULL REVERSE.

As well, you have helped decimate the progressive/avante-guard culture here at UCSC by promoting a "dumbed-down" activist atmosphere,
fast food restaurants, the military, sports and frat houses. I'm sorry, but these retrograde entities do NOT belong here!

Although your moves to "green" things up at the University and coursewise have been commendable, they are too little, too late.
Your Environmental Health and Safety program at UC Extension should be retitled, "Environmental Security and Survival".
Its NOT about Biotechnology or Nanotechnology- its about a GREEN REVOLUTION: Renewable Energy, Sustainable Development, Information, Intelligence and Higher Consciousness- elements that are obviously lacking in UCSC's priorities, policies and current environmental curriculum and programs.

UCSC needs to re-instate the Whole Earth Restaurant on campus, kick the right wing frat/military/fast food elements off this campus FOREVER, and start
harnessing the environmental Entrepreneurial spirit that santa cruz specializes in, so we can gain the institutional infrastructure and knowledge base needed to Save our Planet.
UCSC needs to BUILD an Earth Center and quadruple the size of its Environmental Studies dept for starters.

Its now 2009, and UCSC and Santa Cruz should be leading the way in these areas. Because the collective and organizational infrastructure and consciousness are NOT here,
we continue to lose what's left of our planet. Time is the scarcest resource we have, and in the last 10 years, we have lost crucial time.

So, lets DUMP the Info-Nano-Bio Revolution and BEGIN the Green Revolution here at UCSC. We have not a minute to lose!

Sincerely,

Steve Jones
