Oakland's low-income renters took a beating at Oakland's Community and Economic Development Agency (CEDA) meeting today!

Oakland's housing renovation schemes move forward

(Todays CEDA meeting results for Oakland's housing renovation schemes)

By Lynda Carson

Oakland - As expected, earlier today CEDA board members voted for the proposals to offer millions to developers who are willing to displace hundreds of Oakland's low-income renters by way of their renovation proposals.

Around 334 Oakland Community Housing, INC. (OCHI) rental units were hit in this round, at five Oakland residential housing sites.

Tenants at four other Oakland residential housing sites also face major renovation projects being proposed as a result of todays CEDA vote, affecting around 290 low-income rental households.

The proposal to transfer OCHI properties also passed by vote.

There were around 19 speakers for these agenda items, and only 5 were against the renovation proposals (including myself).

Someone from Just Cause appeared at todays CEDA meeting and supported the transfer of OCHI properties, resulting in a show of support for the renovation proposals that were also part of the whole package being voted on to renovate OCHI's properties.

There appeared to be a plan for everything, except for what to do with the poor, elderly, disabled and their families that will be displaced in coming months from the major renovation schemes being voted upon by CEDA members.

Meanwhile the nonprofit housing developers (poverty pimps) seeking loans for their renovation schemes and CEDA staff including Sean Rogan and Marge Gladman tried to assure everyone in the audience that no one will be displaced from their housing once the renovation projects get underway.

The Oakland City Council will vote on the renovation schemes passed today by CEDA members, along with the plan to transfer (give away) OCHI's properties, during the 6:pm March 17, City Council meeting.

The Oakland Tribune and Channel 2 (KTVU) covered todays CEDA meeting, and a story should appear in tomorrows Oakland Tribune newspaper.

Today's CEDA votes affect the following low-income housing sites.

Drachma Housing Project Located At 1428 8th Street, 1510 9th Street, 1711 Goss Street, 1030 Wood Street, 1479 12th Street, 1107 Center Street, and 1503 12th Street. ( $840,000 loan from Oakland for renovation scheme)

The Effie's House Project Located At 829 East 19th St. ( $1,257,000 loan from Oakland, plus $300,000 of EBALDC's own money amounts to $1,527,000 towards the $2 million renovation scheme planned for the 21 unit building)

The Hugh Taylor House Project Located At 1935 Seminary Avenue. ( $1,122,000 loan from Oakland for 43 unit renovation scheme)

The Posada De Colores Apartments Project Located At 2221 Fruitvale Avenue. ( $450,000 loan from Oakland for renovation scheme including 2 buildings with around 100 units in one, plus 100 tenants or more in the other building. I'm not positive these tenants will be displaced, but such a huge loan may displace many of these tenants during renovations.)
