Eve of Justice - Overturn Prop 8

by Liz Highleyman (liz [at] black-rose.com)
Rally and march on the evening before the California Supreme Court hearing on Prop 8, the November 2008 ballot initiative banning same-sex marriage.

A large and spirited crowd came out to the Castro the evening of March 4 to show their support for repeal of Prop 8.

In tomorrow's (March 5) hearing before the state Supreme Court, plaintiffs will argue that the initiative -- which took away the right to same-sex marriage established by a Supreme Court ruling in June 2008 -- is an impermissible revision to the state constitution. The key argument is that no one's civil rights should be put to a vote.

Now famous thanks to his portrayal as a young firebrand in the recent biopic "Milk," Jones has not lost his radical edge. He urged people to know their history...we won't get our rights from clicking a mouse or attending a black-tie dinner, but have to get out and take them. "If you think you are equal, then act like it!"

Stalwart face of Marriage Equality, many believe Prop 8 would not have won if McKay and others like her had been allowed to run an open campaign, telling the stories of LGBT couples & families.

Tyler and wife Diane Olsen were the first lesbian couple married in Southern Calif. after June ruling (pioneers Phyllis Lyon and the late Del Martin were first in the north). Also called for taking back rights, "closets are vertical coffins."
