Defend ACORN Against Right-Wing Attacks

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 : During the fall elections, the McCain-Palin ticket joined right-wing talk media hosts in making wildly false allegations about the community organization, ACORN. These claims were designed to deter ACORN’s voter registration and outreach efforts among low-income families, and clearly failed. But Obama’s victory has not stopped the right-wing media machine from launching new falsehoods.

Republicans insisted during the stimulus debate that $25 million was earmarked for ACORN. Lou Dobbs, CNN’s self-proclaimed “Mr. Independent” had several shows in which he displayed phone numbers and email addresses urging viewers to stop ACORN’s alleged receipt of money as part of the stimulus package’s aid to distressed neighborhoods. It takes time and money to combat these right-wing attacks, and California ACORN is having a fundraiser featuring Congressmember Barbara Lee and other progressive leaders on March 12 to raise some badly needed funds.
