A night of Arabic classical and folkloric music with Egyptian maestro Dr. Sary Dowidar.

Recognizing the importance of breaking barriers of fear and misunderstanding, ASWAT Ensemble was founded in January 2000 by Nabila Mango, a Palestinian American dedicated to community work. ASWAT (Arabic for "voices") is the first and only Bay Area Arab Community music ensemble of 17 musicians and 20 singers of diverse backgrounds.

ASWAT has been successful in creating a space of celebration of Arabic music in the Bay Area. ASWAT promotes cross-cultural understanding and appreciation through preserving, promoting and performing classical and Folk music from the Arab World.

In this Winter 2009 concert, we present 17 musicians and 20 singers on 4 'ouds, Qanun, 4 Arab and Western Percussion, Nay, 5 Violins, Bass, and Cello. Solos will include ASWAT leading singer Yasmeen Daifallah singing a song by Abd al-Halim Hafiz and a new favorite Turkish singer Gulsum Temirer singing Um Kulthum.

The music will include instrumental music by late Egyptian composer Mohammad Abdel Wahab, a composition by ASWAT's senior violinsit Hussain Resan, songs of Um Kulthum, Fairuz, Abdel Halim Hafiz, Mohammad Fawzi and Mohammed Abdel Wahab. Free Parking Available. Complimentary Arabic Coffee.
