Author Event - Sylvia Sellers-Garcia discusses her award-winning novel When the Ground Turns in Its Sleep. Nitido Aman and his parents have never talked about exactly where he came from or what happened in his family's village during Guatemala's wrenching civil war. With the death of his father, and the continuing silence of his mother, Nitido travels back to Guatemala to see what he could discover. Upon his arrival, he is mistaken for the new village priest. Rather than correct the mistake, Nitido undertakes the role for reasons he can't even explain to himself, and begins to know the people and hear their stories. What he finds in Río Roto, is a place shrouded in silence and secrets, a place that can neither escape nor give voice to the unnamed horrors it has survived. Nítido is at once determined and frightened to unearth these horrors-even as they force him to reevaluate his own haunted past. Tensely paced and written in elegant prose, Sylvia Sellers-Garcia's stunning debut novel is moving, mysterious, and powerful. *** Sylvia Sellers-Garcia is currently in the doctoral program at UC Berkeley in Latin American Studies. When the Ground Turns In Its Sleep has just been released in a paperback edition.
