California State Capitol Kwanzaa Celebration features hourly free screenings of the film “The Black Candle” inside our California State Capitol on the first day of Kwanzaa, Friday, December 26, 2008, beginning at 12 noon, Room 126.

You can also receive the information and application to join our ‘Kwanzaa 365 Faith Based Initiative,’ a nationwide effort to promote locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables for better diet related health outcomes within our community.

We hope you will invest in your community and lend us your support toward restoring ‘Agriculture as the Foundation of Black Culture.’ During our Membership Drive, each new or renewal membership, through the end of Black History Month 2009, will receive a complimentary copy of the extraordinary new documentary, “The Black Candle.”

“The Black Candle, A Kwanzaa Celebration” already gaining international acclaim, is the first feature film on the Kwanzaa holiday and is the work of author/filmmaker/educator M. K. Asante, Jr.

The film traces Kwanzaa’s origins from ancient African agricultural ‘first fruits’ celebrations to the modern holiday’s creation out of the Black Power movement of the 1960s to its evolution and its impact on the modern world.

“The Black Candle” is narrated by world renown poet Dr. Maya Angelou and features commentary by rapper/activist Chuck D; poet Amiri Baraka; Synthia Saint James, the artist who designed the Kwanzaa postage stamp and Kwanzaa’s creator, Dr. Maulauna Karenga, among others.

Join the Kwanzaa 365 Network and receive your copy of "The Black Candle."
