Redwoods Cut on UCSC's Science Hill for Biomedical Building
Over four hundred days ago, a handful of activists climbed up into the trees on Science Hill as a symbol of resistance to the university's plan to destroy 120 acres of campus forest. For the past 13 months, the tree sit has drawn attention to UCSC's reckless plan to develop upper campus without regard for the welfare of one of Santa Cruz's last wild ecosystems.
On December 13th at approximately 8 AM, the tree sit drew to a close as police seized control of Science Hill, arresting one tree sitter. Later, a tree cutting company (William's Tree Service) hired by the university cut down a grove of 100 year old redwood trees to make way for construction of a Biomedical building.

glad to see the students and taxpayers wasting money on armed guard getting the cut out. go UC system. sarcasm implied. nothing like the univ being scared of a few protesters. dumb univ officials. get real and spend the OT on useful people power. cops aren't useful energy, its repression
Those police appear to be wearing riot or spit shield hats? What is that bus?
I heard a few were arrested for trying to cross the line. Has anybody else? I was told by a teacher her student Rich Gazinya? was held. How do you find out? he school and jail were not helpful in my questions.
That is riot gear and face masks. The tree sitters, both in Santa Cruz and Berkley, have a tradition of throwing their feces and urine at cops.
