After 13 months, Tree Sit Ends

by Long Range Resistance
Press Conference at Base of Campus
2pm Today!
Santa Cruz, CA -- After 13 months as a symbol of community resistance to UCSC's destructive expansion plans, the Science Hill Tree Sit ended around 9 am this morning. The end of the Tree Sit was peaceful and no one was hurt, though one person was arrested. The Tree Sit was one aspect of a larger movement opposed to the University's plans to destroy 120 acres of campus, and that resistance will continue. An official Tree Sit statement will be made at 2pm at the main entrance of UCSC Campus. Tree Sitters and Tree Sit supporters will be available for questions.

by far away, yet oh so near
wow, that was quick. negotiations end, and like a proverbial keystone kop movie, the tree-sitters come down, mere hours before the axes start swinging. coincidence? hmmm...

So - has any budget information been sent back to the schools regarding infrastructure funding? There can probably be multiple sources of funding for buildings, but in the last couple months, there have been dire reports about how the state is in debt for a sum far larger than the entire UC and community college system. They're going to have to cut all sorts of necessary services.

Here, the Financial Times is talking about how California's municipal bonds are downgraded because the state could default. Major projects like levees, bridges, schools are being cut.

California might have a $41b deficit over 1.5 years!! In comparison - the entire state budget of Nevada is $7billion, and our state budget is $140b
