Peninsula | Global Justice and Anti-Capitalism'Tis the Season to Support FAIR TRADE
The Raging Grannies Action League and Global Exchange offer tips for shopping with social justice in mind, during this holiday season and throughout the year. New lyrics to holiday tunes accompany the photos below; they were taken on December 12 at: What does the Fair Trade system accomplish? It benefits over 800,000 farmers organized into cooperatives and unions in 48 countries. Fair Trade helps farmers provide for their families' needs and invest in community development.
But there IS a catch... these farmers still have to sell most of their crop outside of the Fair Trade system because not enough companies are willing to buy at Fair Trade prices. You can help increase the demand for Fair Trade by purchasing Fair Trade certified products, this holiday season and YEAR ROUND. It really really does help small-scale producers! Ask, "is this coffee/cocoa fair trade?" when you stop for a cup. Retailers need to hear that there is real demand! The Raging Grannies went on a little scouting trip in Mountain View, California and found that some coffee shops will make you a cup of Fair Trade coffee fresh brewed if they have Fair Trade roasted beans for sale, even if they usually don't sell it brewed up. Sometimes they even sell it for the same price as a regular cup. Raging Grannies say "buy less, and when you must shop, buy fair trade whenever possible." At granny ages, we all have acquired way too much stuff! For more ways to support Fair Trade visit Global Exchange's website here. Photos by R. Robertson and E. Moran, also available in hi resolution.

adapted from Seattle Raging Grannies song by Raging Grannies Action League tune: GOD REST YE MERRY GENTLEMEN Slow down ye frantic shoppers for there’s something we must say If you would spare a moment all the hype would go away Big business has been telling us what Christmas means today Now it’s time we decided for ourselves, for ourselves Yes it’s time we decided for ourselves. Some people feel that Christmas is when Jesus makes a call For others it’s a time to stress good will and peace to all But advertisers tell us it means Santa’s at the mall Now it’s time we decided for ourselves, for ourselves Yes it’s time we decided for ourselves. And if you feel the need to buy, we've got a better way Go get yourself some Fair Trade Goods, it's worth the price you'll pay And friends will love the gift they open up on Christmas day Cuz it’s time we decided for ourselves, for ourselves Yes it’s time we decided for ourselves. Granny hats are off to Louise Nelson of Austin who penned this to the tune of Jingle Bells!
Handmade crafts, hand-dyed scarves, Made with loving care By artisans who benefit, From prices that are FA-AIR! Chocolate bars, coffee beans, Fair trade all the way. Oh what fun they are to give, And get on Christmas Day. When you buy fair trade, You're buying someone's time Ensuring they receive, More than just a dime. When you give fair trade, You give more than a gift - You're giving opportunities To those who need a lift!
