Obama nominee Shinseki did not oppose Iraq war

by DLi
Corporate media is full of praise for Obama's nomnation of Gen. Eric Shinseki as Sec'y of Veteran Affairs, citing him as Rumsfeld's foe on the Iraq War. But Shinseki never opposed the War; he just felt inadequate number of Invaders were sent to Iraq to maintain the U.S. Occupation.
In an address at the Univ. of Hawaii in 2006, Shinseki was asked why the USA should not be tried for war crimes under the Nuremberg principles. He ducked the question by claiming that the decision for war was a political issue and soldiers were not to go there. But the Nuremberg principles specifically required soldiers and commanders to oppose an illegal war, and soldiers could not evade responsibility just by saying they were following orders.

Obama himself apparently feels likewise. He has never questioned the (il)legality of the Iraq Invasion, nor the overall goal of the USA Empire. His continual support for "U.S. leadership in the world" is a standard euphemism to maintain the Iron Fist of American Military Imperialism. All of his nominees so far has excluded any war opponent; instead, he has pledged to increase the military budget--already 50% of the entire global spending on war-making--to bolster the Pentagon! He has simply used his "charm" & anti-war rhetoric to reap the votes of unwitting political Pollyannas who projected their own misguided wishes on his candidacy. Hence, the reality of the Obama-Soros "Change" is simply "Staying the NeoCON Course"!

In actual fact, Gen. Antonio Taguba--the Army general who investigated the Abu Ghraib torture chambers--would have been a far better choice. At least Taguba had the courage to call the U.S. torture policies at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere war crimes, and he opined that those in the chain of command responsible should have been prosecuted. Still, he did not actually opposed the Imperial Iraq invasion/occupation. For that, progressives in the U.S. would have to look for officers like Lt. Ehren Watada, who has refused to go to Iraq and is still on trial for his principled stance. Real Peace activists should/must support those soldiers who refuse to fight for U.S. aggressions overseas.
