Ten Thousand Protest Against H8 in San Francisco

by Felix Barrett (revolution.sfbureau [at] gmail.com)
More than ten thousand demonstrated in San Francisco on November 15 against Proposition 8.

"Today is a national tipping point. History will look back on this day as the day that the national LGBT community rose up and said, 'We are not going back.' "
-- " Molly McKay, spokeswoman for Marriage Equality USA

Ten thousand rallied and marched in SF on November 15, joining thousands more in more than 300 cities across the country (and internationally). Thousands rallied in Chicago and New York. An estimated 25,000 filled the streets in San Diego. Hundreds gathered in Oakland, Fresno, Santa Cruz, San Josae and at many other places. There were demonstrations in Alabama and Fargo North Dakota.

Join the Impact! called on “LGBT Community, friends and family” to remember that gay pride and gay rights were born, not through the ballot but in the streets at the 1969 Stonewall Riots. Their call says, “We will not step down, we will not be silenced, and we will not compromise our rights!”

It is inspiring that at this moment, a movement is coming into the street that is not “waiting and seeing” what Obama will do (he has already made clear he opposes gay marriage, and the shameful silence of his campaign had a lot to do with the proposition passing).

This is exactly what is needed! Proposition 8 was an attack on a basic fundamental right and everyone -- gay or straight, of whatever nationality – who cares about justice and humanity needs to join in the protests. Now.

PS -- The Chronicle reported that people were arrested blocking a freeway entrance. If anyone was there can they report on this?
