Raging Granny Rally Draws Hundreds in Mountain View

by Overturn Prop 8! (info [at] raginggrannies.com)
A demonstration pulled together on very short notice drew hundreds of protesters to the SF peninsula town of Mountain View. The Raging Grannies had to work fast to organize, but their team of *Granny Brides* were prepped for action from a similar demo a few days earlier in nearby Palo Alto. So they revved up their Taxi Crate amplifier and went to town...to DOWNtown Mountain View, that is, where they met up up with like-minded folks, many of whom are also active in the immigrant rights and anti-war movements on the peninsula. From brand new friends made at the rally, the Grannies recruited new members from ages 16 to 86!

First, the Grannies welcomed the crowd in both Spanish and English and reminded everyone to check in with them for further information, including details on the next Equal Right to Marry Demonstration coming up on the 22nd of November in Sacramento.

Then the Grannies sang songs to tunes new and old; an especially popular one was to the tune of "Makin' Whoopee", a real oldie but goodie with not-so-subtle sexual context considered pretty darn risque in the 1940's. See the updated lyrics for gay marriage equality below in photo section.

Granny antics inspired several young women to stand up and lead cheers! After about 45 minutes of rallying the crowd spontaneously took off down "the Castro" (Mountain View's Castro Street, that is) for an impromptu and inspired march. Acclaimed documentary maker Pam Walton captured all the action for a new film she is making due to be be released in early 2009. Stay tuned to the Grannies blog and website for news of its premier scheduled in San Jose, California!

Castro Street in Mountain View is a sort of Chinatown for the area; the Grannies strolled past outdoor cafes, passing out lyric sheets for their *No on 8* ditties, and eventually stopped for Pearl tea. Make that EXTRA pearl for Grannies, please!

Raging Granny in Training, Granny "E". She's an artist who has been with the Grannies for several months, and finds Granny activities to be the perfect outlet for her creativity. And she is NOT the youngest Granny after today, because a 16 year old from the Mountain View rally joined on the spot!

Another Groom (“Makin’ Whoopie”)

Another groom, another groom
Another sunny honeymoon
Love is so pleasin’, no other reason
For makin’ whoopee

Italian shoes, who cares the price
Both grooms are nervous
they answer twice, Prop 8 was killin’, some folks weren't willin’
for them to whoopee

Picture two happy love birds
No matter who they be
Saying those wedding vow words
To marry, all should be free

Another bride, another bride
Another marriage no one will hide
Let all who want to, say the words “I do”
And go make whoopee

Lots of outdoor cafes on "the Castro" in Mountain View. Everyone asked, Hey, what's up, Grannies? So we passed out lyric sheets to let them know that today's march was about equal rights for LGBT community.

Oooh, let's take a break at this cafe. After all those years of wearing BAD shoes, Grannies don't like to march on hard concrete. And yes, by bad shoes we do mean the dreaded PUMPS!

Gotta get us some pearl tea! NO melamine tainted powdered milk please, extra pearl and light on the caffeine. Grannies gotta go home and NAP after a long, hard, but exciting and worthwhile gig. As Borat would say, "Big Success!"
