As the crises in the Mortgage Industry and on Wall Street highlight the instability of a poorly regulated housing market, Oakland Housing Authority follows a disturbing national trend towards privatization of public housing.

On September 22, Oakland Housing Authority (OHA) Board of Commissioners will vote whether to apply for disposition. The plan is to sell 1,615 units of public housing (half of the public housing units in Oakland) to an unknown affiliate and apply to use Section 8 - a program that allocates a larger amount of money per unit and subsidizes private landlords.

OHA currently lacks funding from the federal government to maintain its programs at a level that residents deserve. However, we think any plan to address the issues with the public housing in Oakland needs to meet certain principles- guarantees of long term affordability; genuine community input and control; and government responsibility for providing housing, rather than a shift towards an instable housing market that seriously under-serves those with incomes and physical needs of public housing residents.

We oppose the OHA disposition plan because it simply doesn't measure up. Click here http://www.justcauseoakland.org to read our letter to OHA Board of Commissioners, which outlines our position and concerns. See letters in the comment section.

We will be sharing our concerns alongside housing advocates from the Public Interest Law Project, National Housing Law Project, Bay Area Legal Aid, who will join us Monday as we make our case directly to the Commissioners!

How can I support residents of public housing?
1. Come to the press conference and board meeting and show the OHA Board that the community cares about public housing!
2. Volunteer to give rides to residents so they can participate in the action! Call Becki at 510-763-5877 if you can give rides between 3:30 and 5:45pm.

Be There!!! Save Oakland's Public Housing!
