The Honorable Hans G. Klemm, Ambassador of the United States to Timor-Leste

While Timor-Leste has made significant progress in a number of areas since gaining independence from Indonesia, the country faces daunting challenges. As one of the poorest nations in Asia, basic income, health, and illiteracy are among the lowest in the region. Moreover, rural areas, lacking in infrastructure and resources, remain brutally poor. Ambassador Hans Klemm joins the Council to discuss efforts to protect human rights, rebuild the economy, and reestablish public services in this new country.
