SAN FRANCISCO, CA (Monday, August 25, 2008) – And Marriage for All announced today that, on August 28, the coalition will host simultaneous “watch parties” in Northern California to celebrate and view the historic Democratic National Convention. The events are co-sponsored by the California NAACP.
On August 28, 1963, civil rights activist Bayard Rustin organized the March on Washington, where Martin Luther King Jr. made the famous “I Have A Dream” speech. On August 28, 2008—45 years to the date of that historic event—Senator Barack Obama formally will accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States.
“We are thrilled to join with community leaders and residents in celebrating this significant occasion,” said Andrea Shorter, Campaign Director for And Marriage for All. “We look forward to celebrating this major step for civil rights as we continue the work to advance equal rights and opportunities for all of us in this country.”
A partnership between And Castro For All, Bayard Rustin LGBT Coalition and SFNoir, And Marriage for All is a newly formed group spearheading a same-sex marriage public education campaign. The group is conducting outreach primarily to African American communities in Northern California, and has joined forces with leading statewide advocates for marriage equality, including: CA NAACP, National Black Justice Coalition, National Center for Lesbian Rights, Equality California, People for the American Way, GLAAD, Let California Ring and more.
