The Canadian government has ordered the deportation of a former U.S. Army soldier who fled to Canada four years ago seeking refugee status. In 2004, Jeremy Hinzman became the first war resister to seek asylum in Canada instead of going to fight in Iraq. On Wednesday Canada’s Border Services Agency ordered the 29-year-old Hinzman, his wife, son and baby daughter to leave the country by Sept. 23. His attorneys say they plan to appeal the deportation order. In 2005, Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board rejected his claim for refugee status.
Jeremy Hinzman faces up to five years in prison in the United States. Last month the Canadian government deported another war resister – Robin Long – who is now serving a jail term in Colorado. Jeremy Hinzman joins us from Toronto.
