SUPERVISORS COOK, KOBSEFF TAKE DAM ISSUE TO WASHINGTON, DC LAWMAKERS
Siskiyou Daily News - 8/6/08
http://www.siskiyoudaily.com/news/x1600193816/Supervisors-Cook-Kobseff-take-dam-issue-to-Washington-DC-lawmakers
Stating that their recent trip to Washington, D.C. was “very productive,” Siskiyou County supervisors Jim Cook and Michael Kobseff agreed that they had achieved their goal of providing national lawmakers with more information and with options other than dam removal for solving the problems on the Klamath River. “We need more water for upper Klamath Basin irrigation and we need to improve fish habitat,” Kobseff said. “We can do that and keep the clean hydroelectric power that’s vital for U.S. consumers.”

HOW KARL ROVE'S PLAN TO KILL SALMON LED TO A GOP SENATOR'S REELECTION
The Public Record - 8/5/08
http://www.pubrecord.org/politics/237.html?task=view
In January 2002, at a retreat in West Virginia, Karl Rove gave a PowerPoint presentation to at least 50 managers at the Department of the Interior to discuss polling data, and emphasized the importance of getting Oregon Senator Gordon Smith, a Republican, reelected that year. The way to get Smith reelected to another term, Rove reportedly told the Interior Department officials, would come via the agency's support of a highly controversial measure: diverting water from the Klamath River Basin to farms in the area that were experiencing unusually dry conditions, thereby supporting the GOP's agricultural base.

WARREN BUFFETT, SALMON KILLER
Counterpunch - 8/1/08
http://www.counterpunch.org/bacher08012008.html
Advocates for Klamath Dam removal are working with the Indigenous Peoples’ Power Project to provide direct action workshops and skills trainings as they increase pressure on the world's richest man, Warren Buffett, to remove his fish killing dams on the Klamath River. According to a statement from the Klamath Justice Coalition, the direct action training sessions aim "to empower locals and provide additional tactics to pressure Warren Buffett’s PacifiCorp to remove the lower four Klamath River dams." The latest training session was held Wednesday, July 30th at the Hoopa Youth Center on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation. A previous session was conducted in Klamath on the Yurok Indian Reservation. “We’ve been campaigning hard for five years and still the company refuses to take responsibility for the dams’ destruction of our fishery and communities," said Chook-Chook Hillman, one of the event organizers. "So it's time we consider more aggressive tactics.”

CHUMASH ACTIVISTS HOLD MALIBU EVENT TO SAVE KLAMATH RIVER
Malibu Surfside News - 7/30/08
http://www.klamathriver.org/Documents/Malibu_Surfside_News_Klamath_Issue.pdf
Klamath River activists who are fighting to remove dams and restore the river and its legendary salmon received support from local Chumash at a recent event. Klamath Karuk tribe member Molli White embodies the spirit of coming together as she makes acorn soup with the help of three young girls in traditional Chumash attire. "All struggles for justice are connected," said event organizer and Ventura Coastkeeper Mati Waiya.

MURKY WATERS: WATER IN LAKE EWAUNA ISN'T WORSE THAN NORMAL THIS SUMMER
Klamath Falls Herald and News - 8/2/08
http://pioneer.olivesoftware.com/Repository/ml.asp?Ref=UEtGLzIwMDgvMDgvMDIjQXIwMDIwMg==&Mode=HTML&Locale=english-skin-custom
City employees often watch as more than 30 pelicans flock to an outfall pipe at the city’s wastewater treatment plant and dip their beaks to feed on the fish gathered there. The birds are regular customers at the pipe on Lake Ewauna, said Wastewater Division Manager Jeff Fritz. Fritz and others on his staff said fish gather at the pipe that releases treated sewage water because that water is cleaner and has more oxygen than water already in the lake. Other agency officials say fish gathering near shore is normal behavior, but the water quality in Lake Ewauna is poor and likely doesn’t have much oxygen for the fish, especially in the summer... Some years have seen large fish die-offs, but this year the number of fish dying because of summer conditions is typical and nothing BOR officials are concerned about.

WOOD RIVER RESTORATION EFFORTS WILL HELP KLAMATH LAKE RAINBOWS
KATU.com - 7/28/08
http://www.katu.com/news/outdoors/news/25909834.html
In August, biologists from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will begin restoring habitat in the headwaters of the Wood River where rainbow trout from Upper Klamath Lake migrate to spawn. “We believe that 100 percent of the rainbow trout that spawn in the Wood River use the mile and a half stretch below the headwaters,” said Bill Tinniswood, assistant fish biologist for ODFW’s Klamath Watershed District. “It’s one of our key spawning habitats for rainbow trout that come out of Upper Klamath Lake.”

PROJECT WILL ASSESS FISH HABITAT IN YREKA CREEK
Siskiyou Daily News - 7/31/08
http://www.siskiyoudaily.com/news/x518449846/Project-will-assess-fish-habitat-in-Yreka-Creek
The Shasta Valley Resource Conservation District in a news release announced the recent kick-off of the Yreka Creek Watershed Uplands Assessment project. This study is part of a larger project which includes an ecological storm water assessment for the city of Yreka, an aquatic assessment and a watershed improvement implementation plan for Yreka Creek. The Shasta Valley RCD received funding for the combined project through a grant from the Siskiyou County Resource Advisory Committee under the authority of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000, the release said.

OREGON'S SANDY RIVER SUCCESSFULLY REINVENTS ITSELF AFTER DAM REMOVAL
The Oregonian - 7/30/08
http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/news/1217390121239080.xml&coll=7
As dams go, Marmot Dam on the Sandy River wasn't huge. But now that it's gone, its impact is turning out to be enormous. The removal of the nearly 50-foot-high dam by Portland General Electric in October gave scientists perhaps their best chance to watch as a river digested a vast amount of rocks, sand and gravel collected over many decades in a reservoir. Some had worried that sediment piled behind the dam would suffocate salmon and block tributaries downstream. It did nothing of the sort. In fact, the river has since digested the equivalent of about 150 Olympic-size swimming pools full of sediment -- without a hiccup.

Announcements:

* SALMON RIVER COOPERATIVE SPRING CHINOOK DIVES RESCHEDULED DUE TO FOREST FIRE - August 12-14th in Somes Bar, CA
The annual Salmon River Chinook dives will take place August 12-134h. Register for the dives through SRRC, http://www.srrc.org, and check Nat Pennington's voicemail for any last minute changes in plans due to forest fires: (530) 722-5037. Training will start at 1 pm on the 12th at the Forks of Salmon School building. We encourage everyone to participate in August, as this year's survey is particularly important for several reasons. First, it will show us how the Salmon River spring Chinook run is responding to the 2008 full closure of commercial fishing. Also, the numbers will help determine what Chinook stock to use for reintroduction in the Upper Klamath - Salmon River Springers are the ideal candidate, but only if there are enough to go around. Finally, the Salmon River run is the largest remnant population of the once million strong Klamath spring Chinook and we have 26 years of consecutive population data to build on. - Nat Pennington

* OPC SALMON PROTECTION WORKSHOPS FOR THE PUBLIC, EUREKA, CA - August 26th in Eureka, CA
Tuesday, August 26, 2008 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Agriculture Center, 5630 South Broadway Street, Eureka
From the Ocean Protection Council: "The OPC recognizes that California has already benefitted from a significant amount of work by thousands of people on salmon issues and seeks to build on and maximize these investments in salmon. The workshops have three goals: (1) to review current California policy on wild salmon protection; (2) to identify the top causes of wild salmon population decline; and (3) to receive feedback from the public on how the OPC can help ensure wild populations of salmon exist in California for future generations. There is a particular interest in “big ideas” about statewide policy objectives for salmon and the core strategies we are using, or should consider using, to achieve those objectives."
If you have questions about the workshops, please direct them to Valerie Termini (OPC staff) at 510–286-0319. More on the OPC at http://www.resources.ca.gov/copc/
Bay Area residents can attend an alternate meeting in Sausalito: Thursday, August 14, 2008 from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. at the Bay Model Visitor’s Center, 2100 Bridgeway, Sausalito
