Raging Grannies from SF to Ottawa Rally Around War Resisters

by R. Robertson
Raging Granny groups across North America have taken up the cause of US war resisters seeking refuge in Canada. From San Francisco to the Canadian capital of Ottawa, members of this international women's organization continue to petition Prime Minister Stephen Harper to respect the sentiment of the majority of Canadian citizens and "Let War Resisters Stay". This week San Francisco Grannies revved up their letter writing campaign while their sisters in Ottawa polled pedestrians in that city's busy Byward Market.

The Ottawa Raging Grannies are in the forefront of ensuring that no more war resisters are returned to the States. They are most unhappy that US citizen Robin Long was returned on July 15; they continue to petition the Canadian government to permit the other objectors to remain in Canada.

Last week, they handed out postcards addressed to Stephen Harper, Prime Minister, on the Sparks Street Mall. These no-postage-needed cards carry the message that public opinion and parliament say, "Support the War Resisters! Let them Stay!"
On July 22 they chose a location with high pedestrian traffic in the Byward Market and set up a flip-chart for people to indicate whether they supported the war resisters staying in Canada. Not one person voted to have them deported.

Raging Granny groups across North America continue with this important struggle for social justice.

The Bay Area including the city of San Francisco, down the peninsula and throughout the South Bay is known as "Raging Granny Territory". Male supporters of tall stature not withstanding....
