RHANAC's Steve Edrington Accusses Renters Of Being
Entrenched Tenants If They Reside In Rent Controled
Units

By Lynda Carson -- May 28, 2008

Oakland -- According to the Oxford dictionary, among
other things the word entrenched means to encroach,
trespass, intrude, invade, infringe.

In the May 25 Oakland Tribune article by Barbara
Grady, called; Oakland, Berkeley renters oppose
Proposition 98 -- in it, Steve Edrington of RHANAC
says; "Rent control is not affordable housing," he
said. "It protects entrenched tenants."

In his quote, Edrington forgot to mention that out of
the 10 most expensive urban areas to reside in
throughout the nation, that 5 of the most expensive
areas exist in California, and that rent control has
done little to nothing to keep most landlords from
becoming multi-millionaires several times over, by
renting out units to renters.

What kind of a madman would try to convince the public
that anyone residing in a rent controled unit, is an
"entrenched tenant," and therefore tenant protections
and rent control should be abolished.

When it comes to the big lie being used to promote
Proposition 98, in an effort to eliminate tenant
protections and rent control, some people are dumb
enough to say anything, and Steve Edrington is no
exception.

Lets keep in mind that tenants are invited into rental
properties to rent a space. They go through a very
rigorous and expensive screening process before moving
in, and eventually they make people like Steve
Edrington wealthy, over and over again.

Some renters reside in places long enough, that they
actually pay off the mortgage of the property for some
landlords, and at that point the tenant should be
invited in as co-partners in owning the property, as a
result of what they have payed through the years.

Renters in rent controled units are not entrenched
tenants, but are invited paying customers. Plain and
simple. They are the working class, including our
police, firemen, teachers, cooks, painters,
carpenters, secretaries, gardners, mail carriers,
electricians, families and clergy who make up our huge
vast communities in the Bay Area.

Renters need protection from landlords, and from
Proposition 98. Before the voters passed Measure EE in
Oakland in 2002 (Just Cause Eviction Protections), the
courts were so clogged with evictions that an eviction
was occurring every ten minutes in the courts, and 65%
of those being evicted were people of color.

Landlords were evicting families by the thousands just
so they could raise the rents on the next customer to
a higher level, and most evictions were no cause
evictions.

In a world such as this, how do you explain to a group
of 4 year olds that the people at RHANAC view children
in rent controled apartments as "entrenched tenants?"

How do you explain to children that associations like
RHANAC want to end tenant protections and rent
control, just so they can raise the rents or threaten
to evict their families from our communities if they
do not have the money to make these greedy landlords
happy?

It's entrenched landlords in the community who are the
real problems in society, and renters will never have
enough money to make these greedy people happy, no
matter how high they raise the rents.

On June 3, I want everyone to vote No on Prop 98, and
Yes on Prop 99.

In addition, Steve Edrington, the executive director
of the Rental Housing Association of Northern Alameda
County (RHANAC), needs to be fired for saying
something so offensive to the community at large.
RHANAC is no friend to the renters, and Edrington has
proven this over and over again through the years.

No on Prop 98!

Commentary: Prop. 98 Would Eliminate Rent Control and
Tenant Protections

By Lynda Carson -- Berkeley Daily Planet
Thursday, May 08

The June 2008 Ballot has a dangerous measure known as
Proposition 98 (California Property Owners and
Farmland Protection Act, or CPOFPA). If passed by the
voters, Prop. 98 would terminate rent control, tenant
protections, and would place homeowners at risk by
allowing unscrupulous property owners to challenge
existing building codes and zoning laws that may
prohibit the placing of a “pig sty” next to someone’s
home, or a “porn shop” next to a church or school.

the Hilton Hotel, where the Apartment Owner’s
Association was holding a seminar to teach landlords
how to evict tenants. AOA President Dan Faller calls
Prop 98 “war” against rent control and those who
oppose 98 “terrorists.”

Owners and Farmland Protection Act. If passed by the
voters, Prop 98 would terminate rent control and other
tenant protections and would place homeowners at risk
