empathy

As I enter the downtown library,
I find a young man,
with a bleach-blonde crewcut,
complaining loudly
to the security guard
that homeless men are
washing themselves
in the men's restroom.


So I say to the young man,
"God forbid that YOU
should ever be homeless!"



He replies,
"I wasn't even talking to you."



I silently walk away.
