If you're concerned about the cocktail of ingredients the CDFA plans to spray over the Bay Area every month starting in August, call or fax the Governor and First Lady to register your opposition -- and ask the Governor to reconsider his support for this aerial spraying program.

Governor Schwarzenegger has the power to stop the aerial spraying but has claimed publicly that the program is safe -- this despite a number of experts questioning every aspect of the official CDFA line, including the safety of the products and the actual need to eradicate this pest as the CDFA suggests.

Hundreds of individuals from the Monterey and Santa Cruz areas became ill and are still ill. The CDFA has denied a connection between their illnesses and the spraying. But as Mike Lynberg wrote in a recent Chronicle editorial, state agencies have done just a cursory investigation of this, at best.

The product will remain in the environment for 30 days, and the spraying can occur for three to six days of the month, for nine months of every year, for up to ten years. There really is no way to escape the spray if you are concerned. And there are safe alternatives -- such as the pheromone traps set in other areas in lieu of aerial spraying.

And that doesn't even address some of the potential economic and environmental effects, including impacts on tourism, organic farming, and real estate values.

This weekend KGO Radio host Joanie Greggains brought together a number of experts opposed to the spray. Some of these individuals also spoke at an initial informational forum held in Berkeley in February. (You can read a summary of the Berkeley meeting notes here.)

Joanie Greggains' show will give you a great overview of why so many are opposed to the spray. To listen to this week's show, navigate to this week's show archives and click on Saturday's archives. Joanie discusses the LBAM issue in the 8a to 9a slot.

A recent article by Anna Werner at cbs5.com questions again how much of a risk the apple moth poses, and addresses some of the potential health effects of the spray. Read Anna Werner's piece here.
