Anti-French Protests Escalate in China

Tuesday, April 22, 2008 : Anti-French protests escalated in China, with thousands of protesters shouting slogans in front of Carrefour markets in major cities, reported the World Journal. Carrefour became the target of Chinese nationalists after information that the LVMH group, a big stockholder of Carrefour, donates to the Free Tibet movement became public.
In a statement, Carrefour said that the LVMH group is not participating in their company management. To deal with the angry Chinese, a French official said two special envoys will be sent to China this week. The Sing Tao Daily reported that Christian Poncelet, the president of the French Senate visited Jing Jin, a wheelchair-bound fencer who was attacked holding the Olympic torch in the Paris relay in Shanghai, and brought her a comforting note from French president Sarkozy.
