Some people may think his newly-announced stand
isn't consistent with
his previous vetoes of the same-sex marriage bill.
However, I think the two positions can be reconciled.
He has often said that he wants this issue
to be resolved
EITHER by the California Supreme Court,
OR by vote of the people;
NOT by elected officials (legislature plus governor).
Thus, he's waiting for the Cal Supremes
to interpret our PRESENT state constitution;
as it is today (not amended).
If they decide that the present constitution
requires same-sex marriage, that's okay with him.
If they decide otherwise, that also is okay with him.
Arnold has signed several bills to help queers.
He's NOT homophobic. He is going slow;
letting the years pass by (2004 thru 2008, so far).
Perhaps he figures that the opinions of straight
California voters are gradually becoming more tolerant, year by year; as they get used to the idea that same-sex marriage is routine in Massachusetts, Canada, several European countries, etc., without any ill effects. Maybe he's waiting for polls to show that a majority of Cal voters will be ready in 2010, or 2012, or whenever.
Yes, I understand that same-sex couples want equality yesterday, not in 2012. So do I. But having been an active freedom-seeker for almost half a century, I suggest taking a look thru the lens of history. The queer minority, since Mattachine formed in 1950, has progressed rather rapidly -- compared to other oppressed groups, such as women, racial minorities, drug users, etc.
Try being idealistic and realistic at the same time. That seems inconsistent,
but so does most of our Yin/Yang existence.
