Saturday, April 5, 2008 : LOS ANGELES—Delays in the processing of green card applications have caused a decline in the number of immigrants obtaining lawful permanent residency status, reports the Korea Daily. According to a Homeland Security Department report, in the 2006-07 fiscal year, 1,052,415 people from all over the world became legal residents, showing a 16.8 percent decline from the previous year.
The same trend was also seen in Korean immigrants. The number of Koreans who obtained green cards declined by 8.12 percent and 15.6 percent, respectively, reports the newspaper. According to the newspaper, the processing of green card applications has been slowed largely by a bottleneck at immigration field offices across the country.
