Accion Zapatista Davis Issues Urgent Alert for Political Prisoners in Chiapas!

Acción Zapatista Davis expresses our extreme concern for the physically and psychologically dangerous conditions of the political prisoners who began a hunger strike last month in several prisons in Chiapas demanding their liberty. They have denounced arbitrary detentions, under false charges and in violation of the judicial rights, as a result of their political and/or social actions. Several of the prisoners have been on a hunger strike for over one month. Currently, according to various reliable sources, including the Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas Human Rights Center, more than 45 prisoners are participating in the hunger strike.

Below, first in English then in Spanish, you will find a letter that we have prepared to send to several government officials in Mexico, as well as the Mexican Consulates in Sacramento and San Francisco.

Acción Zapatista Davis expresa su extrema preocupación para el riesgo a la vida e integridad personal de los detenidos que emprendieron una huelga de hambre en varias cárceles de Chiapas con el fin de pedir su libertad. Denuncian encontrarse arbitrariamente detenidos, bajo acusaciones falsas y en violación de su derecho a las garantías judiciales, por sus actividades políticas y/o sociales. Algunos de ellos ya llevan más de un mes en la huelga. Actualmente, según señalan varias fuentes, entre ellas el Centro de Derechos Humanos Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas, hay por lo menos 45 detenidos en huelga de hambre.

LETTER OF PROTEST

April 1, 2008

To Consul Carlos Félix Corona, Mexican Consulate of San Francisco
To Consul Alejandra María Gabriela Bologna Zubikara, Mexican Consulate of Sacramento

We have received news from Chiapas regarding the political prisoners who began a hunger strike in February in three prisons in the state: Cintalapa, San Cristóbal de Las Casas, and Playas de Catazajá. We have also received news regarding two political prisoners in the prison at Tactalpa, Tabasco who have joined the protest by fasting and praying.

Their protest calls our attention to the fact that injustices and human rights abuses are prevalent among the poor and indigenous people of Chiapas; specifically, arbitrary detentions, fabricated charges, imprisonment for crimes they have not committed and confessions obtained by torture. We are concerned for the health and the lives of these prisoners.

The participants in the hunger strike have also called our attention to the fact that all of them belong to social organizations and for this reason we are also concerned that these injustices and human rights abuses are being used to silence free speech and social protest.

We call on you to correct these injustices immediately so that the health and lives of the prisoners on the hunger strike will not be irreversibly damaged. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of all the prisoners on a hunger strike, as well as the immediate and unconditional release of those prisoners who are fasting and praying in solidarity.

We urge you to take the appropriate and necessary measures to ensure the security and physical and psychological well-being of the prisoners, including free and adequate medical attention to each of the prisoners who are participating in the hunger strike, as well as for their family members. Furthermore, in the relevant cases, we demand reparations for the economic and moral suffering of the prisoners caused by all of the years that they have been unjustly deprived of their liberty.

We demand the release of all political prisoners in Chiapas and Tabasco and that the States of Chiapas and Tabasco cease and desist the injustice and human rights abuses, in accordance with the international human rights standards ratified by the Mexican Government, including the American Declaration of Human Rights and the Interamerican Human Rights Convention, the Minimum Norms and Principles for the Treatment of Detainees and Prisoners, and the International Treaty of Civil and Political Rights.

Hemos recibido noticias desde Chiapas acerca de los presos políticos, quienes en el mes de Febrero empezaron una huelga de hambre en tres cárceles del estado: Cintalapa, San Cristóbal de Las Casas y Playas de Catazajá. También, hemos recibido noticias acerca de dos presos políticos de la cárcel de Tacotalpa, Tabasco, que se han unido a la protesta en ayuno y oración.

Su protesta llama nuestra atención al hecho de que los desvíos de la justicia y las violaciones a los derechos humanos sean comunes entre los pobres e indígenas de Chiapas; específicamente, detenciones arbitrarias (sin ordenes de aprehensión), cargos fabricados, encarcelamiento por delitos no cometidos y confesiones obtenidas bajo tortura. Nos preocupa la salúd y la vida de los presos.

Los presos que están en huelga de hambre también han llamado nuestra atención por el hecho de que todos pertenecen a organizaciones sociales, por tanto, nos preocupa que dichos desvíos y abusos en la aplicación de la justicia sean utilizados para acallar la libertad de opinión y la protesta social.

Hacemos un llamado a que se corrijan estas injusticias de manera inmediata para que la salúd y la vida de los presos en huelga de hambre no se vean dañadas irreversiblemente. Exigimos la libertad inmediata y sin condiciones de todos los presos en huelga de hambre, asi como la libertad inmediata y sin condiciones de todos los presos en ayuno y oración en solidaridad.

Les urgimos que tomen las medidas apropiadas y necesarias para garantizar la seguridad y la integridad física y psicológica de los presos, incluyendo la atención médica adecuada y gratuita de todos y cada uno de los detenidos que se encuentran actualmente en la huelga de hambre arriba mencionada, así como de todos los miembros de sus respectivas familias. Además, en los casos correspondientes, exigimos que se les repare el daño moral y económico causado, por todos los años que han permanecido privados injustamente de su libertad.

Pedimos la libertad para todos los presos políticos en Chiapas y Tabasco. También exigimos que cesen en ambos estados las injusticias y los abusos a los derechos humanos, en conformidad con las normas internacionales de derechos humanos ratificadas por México como la Declaración Americana de Derechos Humanos y la Convención Interamericana de Derechos Humanos, los Principios y Normas Mínimas para el Tratamiento de los Reclusos e Internos y el Pacto Internacional de Derechos Civiles y Políticos.
