SalmonAid Fundraiser in Berkeley Saturday, March 29, 4 to 8 pm

by Dan Bacher
The Central Valley fall chinook salmon run has collapsed, largely the result of increased water exports out of the California Delta, declining water quality and years of state and federal government mismanagment. The result is the unprecedented closure of ocean commercial and recreational salmon fishing off California and Oregon this year. The California Fish and Game Commission today voted to close early season salmon fishing in state waters in compliance with an emergency closure adopted at the Pacific Fishery Management Council meeting in Sacramento on March 14.

This fundraiser in Berkeley this Saturday will help pay for the cost of the upcoming SalmonAid Festival in Jack London Square, Oakland, CA. from May 31 thru June 1, 2008. The goal of the festival is "promoting pride in our fish, fishermen and fisheries" and to "protect, restore, enhance and enjoy" West Coast salmon, now in their greatest crisis ever.

SalmonAid is a two day music and informational festival that is being hosted by one of the largest coalitions of salmon advocates across the West – commercial and recreational fishermen, conservationists, tribes, scientists and restaurateurs.

SalmonAid Fundraiser in Berkeley Saturday, March 29, 4 to 8 pm
Location: Olympic Circle Sailing Club (OCSC)
Date: Saturday, March 29
Time: 4PM – 8PM
http://www.salmonaid.org/donate.html

I would like to extend an invitation to you to a fundraising party we are hosting at the Olympic Circle Sailing Club in Berkeley on Saturday, March 29, 4:00 pm Come dance to the bluesy sounds of Captain Mike & the Sea Kings, enjoy a bowl (or three) of the best Gumbo you can find anywhere between Berkeley & the Big Easy, drink some beer or wine if you’re so inclined, bid on fantastic prizes donated by local businesses at our live auction – essentially have a great time while doing the right thing!!!

It takes an incredible amount of diligence and hard work to host a festival such as SalmonAid – in addition to a substantial amount of capital to get started. At this point we have funded the event production, but are short on monies for our media campaign that aims to bring the message about the importance of Salmon Restoration not only to those who attend the actual festival, but also to millions of households along our coast and rivers.

Your support of SalmonAid means everything to those who depend on Salmon for their income, recreation, spiritual needs and overall quality of life. I’m looking forward to meet many of you at our party.

Tickets are $25 in advance, and $35 at the door
any donations are appreciated even if you can’t make it to the party

For tickets and donations, go to: http://www.salmonaid.org/donate.html or call (415) 561-5080, extension 222.

Come celebrate our amazing, iconic salmon and help send a strong message that we need to protect and restore the habitat that healthy, self-sustaining populations of salmon and steelhead have depended on for centuries.

Thank you very much for your support.

Sincerely yours,

Mike Hudson, President – SalmonAid Foundation
