They have fully automatic weapons to use as needed. All of their guns are semi-automatic, which means that you don't have to do anything after you pull the trigger other than pull it again. The weapon in the picture looks like a tear gas canister gun or maybe for large wooden bullets like they used at the port of Oakland a few years ago.

the one thing they have to do once they pull the trigger is please, for the love of god, let go! Just how many times would they need to shoot protesters?
What kind of threat do a bunch of people sitting peacefully in the streets cause to the officers themselves, the Chevron company, or the city of Richmond? Come on!! Especially when it sounds like the protest organizers did a lot of negotiation with the cops to talk about the kind of arrest situation that they had planned. The cops' having automatic weapons, even if they discharge things like tear gas or pepper spray, is a disaster waiting to happen. Less-lethal weapons do kill. Stop Police Brutality, Repression, and the Criminalization of a Generation! http://www.october22.org http://www.stolenlives.org
