Realizing the Olympic Dream

by Perple Lu
The Global Human Rights Torch Relay will make two stops in the Bay Area, San Jose (March 29) and San Francisco (April 5). This is the kick off event in the North America leg of the Relay. Symbolizing freedom and human rights, it "seeks to bring an end to all human rights abuses against people in China" and beyond.
The North American leg of the Global Human Rights Torch Relay will kick off in San Jose on March 29. Lit on August 9, 2007 in Athens, Greece, it "seeks to bring an end to all human rights abuses against people in China" and beyond.

Supporting the Olympic Spirit and echoing the Beijing Olympic slogan, “One World One Dream,” it is a voice of the common dream of humanity resounding. Here is an invitation to all:

“One World One Dream” is this year’s Olympic slogan. We live in a world where people of different lands and throughout the ages have dreamed of dreams. Some have dreamed of freedom; some have dreamed of happiness; some have dreamed of equality; some have dreamed of peace… They are the dreams of human ideals. They are the dreams of the dream of humanity’s consciousness.

“One World One Dream” is this year’s Olympic slogan. But that dream cannot be realized as long as brutality continues to strike mercilessly on the people of Darfur. [1] But that dream cannot be realized as long as Burmese monks continue to be disrobed, beaten and killed. [2] But that dream cannot be realized as long as grievance petitioners continue to be driven away, ignored and silenced. [3] But that dream cannot be realized as long as people of orthodox faith continue to be camped, tortured and even killed for their organs. [4]

“One World One Dream” is this year’s Olympic slogan. That dream has been kept alive and realized by different dreamers, great and small. Their actions have woven the fabric of human moral history. Their heritage inspires and dignifies the world that we live.

“One World One Dream” is this year’s Olympic slogan. Today that dream is rekindled in the Global Human Rights Torch Relay. Today we are all invited to be the torch bearers. Together, we can continue to keep alive the dream of dreams.
