Veterans' bus stops in Fresno on way to Winter Soldier event in D.C.

Vietnam Vets from Portland stop in Fresno on their way to the Winter Soldier Conference in Washington D.C.

Three members of the Portland, Oregon chapter of Veterans for Peace stopped in Fresno for an hour today on their way to the Winter Soldier Conference in Washington D.C. Their Fresno stop was at Olive and Van Ness Avenues in the Tower District, where motorists honked and many people stopped and gave thanks and other signs of appreciation to the veterans. One member, Malcolm Chaddock, had lived in Fresno before moving to Portland in 2004. Riding along with Malcolm are Gordon Sturrock and Jack Dresser in their 1967 Gillig bus. All three are veterans of the Vietnam War. The Winter Soldier Conference is being held by Iraq War veterans, doing much like the Vietnam veterans did 37 years earlier. In 1971, Vietnam vets held a conference they called the Winter Soldier Investigation, to speak out about what was really going on in the Vietnam War. And now, 37 years later Iraq War vets are holding there own Winter Soldier Investigation to speak out about what is really going on in Iraq. The conference is scheduled for March 13 - 16 in Washington D.C. Their next stop is Albuquerque, New Mexico, 750 miles from Fresno, where they will give a presentation at a dinner on March 7. Malcolm and his companions will film their trip and post it on You Tube as they go. The Winter Soldier Conference will be broadcast on Pacifica radio stations. For more information on the Portland veterans group go to www.Squadron13.com and for information on Iraq Veterans Against War go to www.IVAW.org .

1/2 hour notice in the email box? What a drag that was! I'm pretty sure Malcolm Chaddock wasnt in Nam, fortunately, in case you want to correct that. Would have been nice to see him.
I'm ticked at every one of you who failed to notify me of this stop.

Just to piggy back on what Kelly wrote. . .

Malcolm called me at about 9:30 AM on Thursday and said the bus was heading toward Fresno and could I meet them and do an interview. They were getting ready to leave Sacramento at the time. We agreed to meet at about 2 PM. I told him that I would contact the local media in hopes of increasing the visibility of the event. Because I know that sometimes things run late, I sent emails and faxes to the media telling them that the event was going to be at 2:30 PM. I re-scheduled my day so I could be there. Malcolm called a little before 2 and said they were running late and that he thought they would be in Fresno by 3 or 3:30. That was too late for me. I had something else I had to do at that time.

I’m glad that Carloyn Hudson was able to take pictures and cover the story.
A couple of things: I feel for all who would have wanted to greet our good friend, Malcolm, as well as the other Portlanders. For myself, I just happened to be downtown when I received a call from a Peace Fresno member at 3:30, saying they would be here any minute. Carolyn just happened to have a camera with her and got the story.
The good news is that I just received a call from Malcolm, saying that they will return to Fresno following the Winter Soldiers Conference. As soon as he knows the day, he will let us know, and the news will be broadcast. Malcolm can be reached directly at madmal (at) gmail.com .
Also, to correct a few facts from the story: None of the three veterans from Portland were stationed in Viet Nam. Malcolm and Gordon are Cold-War era veterans, with Malcolm stationed in Germany and Gordon in Korea. Jack is a Viet Nam era veteran, who was Chief Psychologist stationed at Madigan Hospital in the state of Washington.

I got Judy's version the next day and my first clues. Sounds like pure luck anyone ran into them, and Carolyn doing a great job sharing the moment!
Nice that we have connections going there for us.
Thanks for clarifying, guys.

thanks for getting the pictures. You guys do such a great job.

I hope they come back to Fresno to tell their stories.

We have at least 9 going from the state of MN. and two from the twin cities will speak at a Potluck fundraising event for IVAW the following Wednesday. I'm sending snailmail letters to Reporters at various news stations and the newspaper to see if after 5 years they will start covering the truth.
