Mayor Coonerty Respond to Concerns About Closing Public Space and Shutting Down the Drumme

by Ryan Coonerty
In response to a community member, Mayor Ryan Coonerty briefly explains his position:

Dear Mayor Ryan Coonerty:
"Ryan Coonerty"
RE: Musicians in Parking Lot Downtown at Farmer's Market

There is a big difference between a loiterer who appears to be "lying in wait" to do mischief ie: rob, steal or vandalize, and a group of musicians entertaining the community for free, while sitting under a tree. I would think the police would be able to discern the difference of intent.

I am just a passerby, who happens to enjoy the music and who exercises my first ammendment right to freedom of speech by contacting you, when I see a group of musicians no longer able to congregate as they have been doing for many years. It seems to me that the laws of "right of ways" and established "use over time" should allow the musicians to continue.

Sincerely,
Karen Kaplan

Thank you for writing. It helps to hear from citizens on issues such as this. The City Council, for many good reasons, can't tell the Police which laws to enforce and not enforce.

We did pass the Parking Lot ordinance in response to concerns from our city and downtown employees who were being harassed on a daily basis. It is a difficult balance the many uses and needs of people downtown.

All the best,

Ryan

City of Santa Cruz

The only thing Connerty cares about is his profit and political power as do the rest of the cities law makers. His concerns are only for his business cronies and other irksome minions that support profit over people. The worst fears voiced by those who spoke against this law has come to pass; the cops are braking up well established gatherings of citizens at the Wednesdays drum circle and food not bombs free feed. There is a powerful and determined group of city leaders targeting the poor and homeless in this city on behalf of profiteers. In a time of ever widening gap of those that have and those who have not this city councils policies is destroying our sense of community. It’s way past time to join the fight against these law makers who are nothing less than community breakers; join us at the drumming circle to resist and reclaim public space for public use. Get up; stand up for your rights. Boycott all bigot business.

For Ryan Coonerty, eliminating the Drum Circle which had been meeting there for over 10 years and the Food Not Bombs feedings which feed poor and homeless people is just one of the sacrifices he is prepared to make so that Bookshop Santa Cruz customers can "feel more comfortable."
That's the kind of leader he is.

Folks might also want to e-mail santa cruz indymedia editors at scimc [at] indymedia.org to move this story out of the doghouse back "above the fold" to the Local News section where it properly belongs.
Thanks to the Indybay editors, who are portrayed as "censors," and often catch flak from Robert Norse.

This is not a "story." It is a public display of a private email exchange. A news "story" would include a detailed account of an event, maybe even a quote or two from some relevant parties. Understand the difference?
Coonerty is so tight-lipped about his views on this issue that when he responds, it is public news. And it is local. And it is relevant to the subject at hand. That's what Public Records Act requests are all about--making the private public when it has public significance.

It would be refreshing if the santa cruz indymediaistas could admit to making mistakes every so often. We're all only human after all. You'd be forgiven.
