They’re Coming to Evict You!

Tuesday, January 22, 2008 : The auditorium at La Raza Centro Legal in San Francisco’s Mission District was packed to the brim last Saturday, January 19th. That may not be unusual for a weekend in the Mission, but this gathering had an especially urgent task: Organize to fight a California state proposition that could wipe out thousands of people’s chances to remain in their affordable apartments.

Sponsored by the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers' Association (the folks behind California’s Proposition 13), the measure (which doesn’t have a number assigned to it yet) purports to reform eminent domain or the right of government under certain circumstances to seize private property. What it will actually do is repeal rent control throughout the state.
