Sat Jan 12 2008 Act Against Torture March to Shut Down Gitmo
Friday January 11th 2008, was the six year anniversary of when the first hooded, shackled men were brought to the U.S. prison at Guantanamo, Cuba. On Friday night, Bay Area activists staged a solemn candlelight march through downtown San Francisco to demand that the U.S. government shut down the detention camp, end indefinite detention, stop waterboarding and all other forms of torture, and repeal the Military Commissions Act of 2006.

Called by Act Against Torture, the march assembled at 4 p.m. at the steps of the U.S. Court of Appeals at 95 7th St., at the corner of Mission St. The marchers then proceeded down Market St. to the Justin Hermann Plaza. Activists dressed to represent the Guantanamo detainees, wearing orange jumpsuits, black hoods, and chains, lead the way.

The San Francisco action was one of more than 75 scheduled for Friday around the world, from Warsaw, Poland ( photoPhotos), to Christchurch, New Zealand.

In Fresno, a demonstration to close Guantanamo and Restore the Bill of Rights was held at the Federal Building on Friday. Street theater included three hooded prisoners in jump suits and the protest focused on the U.S. Government’s use of Guantanamo Bay in Cuba as a center for torture. photoPhotos

In Washington, D.C., there was a rally on the National Mall and a march to the Supreme Court (imc_audio.gif75 arrested protesting Guantanamo Bay).

In New York, among other events, orange-garbed demonstrators were in the audience for the Today Show.

In Florida, activists marched on the United States Southern Command Headquarters of the US military, known as USSOUTHCOM ( photoPhotos ).
