Lt. Ehren Watada's Victory Celebrated in San Francisco! Part Two

by Ben Terrall & Bill Carpenter (wcarpent [at] ccsf.edu)
Last February Lt. Ehren Watada's court-martial was going badly for the government.

So the military judge conveniently declared a mistrial. "I'll give you boys a second bite at the apple," he might as well have said to the military prosecutors. "Be better prepared next time!"

The only problem is that would have put Watada in double jeopardy -- and that would have violated the U.S. Constitution. So a U.S. District Court judge in Washington State last week preliminarily enjoined the military from hauling Watada before another court-martial.

More proceedings lie ahead, but as you'll see here and in Part 1 this is a big victory!

Ying Lee narrates the slideshow in Part 2. The demonstration was in San Francisco's Portsmouth Square on November 9, 2007. Five-minute QT movie. 63MB.
