CA Dept of Food and Agriculture starts blind guinea pig test over Santa Cruz

by John Thielking
The CA Dept of Food and Agriculture sent me an e-mail at 8AM November 9 to tell me that Checkmate spraying over Santa Cruz had already occurred on Nov 8.
So much for being warned BEFORE the spray starts by the e-mail alert system:
****************************************************************

On the evening of November 8 and in the early morning hours of November 9, CDFA applied Light Brown Apple Moth pheromone in Santa Cruz County. Treatment began at 8:01 p.m. and was completed after 4 a.m. The results are as follows:

Zone CASC 1 - 100 percent complete

Zone CASC 2 - 100 percent complete

Zone CASC 3 - 38 percent compete

Zone CASC 4 - 15 percent complete

Zone CASC 5 - 58 percent complete

Zone CASC 6 - 100 percent complete

The tentative plan for Friday evening, November 9, is to complete treatment in Santa Cruz County, weather permitting. Then, if time and weather permit, we would move to the Prunedale/Royal Oaks treatment area and then to the North Salinas/Boronda area. We will have additional details later today.

*********************end of CDFA report**************

I did see a plane making overflights at a low altitude as I was leaving the Western Service Workers office on Mission st at about 9:30PM on Nov 8. I couldn't smell or taste anything at that moment.

I do have a copy of the intake form that WSW uses for their free medical services and I went through the admission process with a client at their office. However, WSW were unwilling to help me directly with screening people who may have health complaints about the Checkmate spray.

If you have experienced symptoms, visit the emergency room or your personal doctor if the symptoms are severe. Emergency rooms have to admit you even if you can't afford to pay. Doctors are required to report illnesses due to pesticide use within 24 hours of seeing the patient with symptoms.

If your symptoms are not severe but still troublesome and you feel you can't afford a doctor visit, then please call me at 408-924-0846 or 408-914-2751 or e-mail me at pagesincolor [at] aol.com and I will use your testimony in an effort to round up some doctors who might be willing to at least give you an exam for free.

This free medical exam concept will continue to be explored even if the results from this week's spraying don't pan out since the spraying will probably resume in the Spring and Summer months of 2008.

I received the following additional e-mail from CDFA at 3PM today

**********************************************************

The California Department of Food and Agriculture would like to issue a reminder to residents in the Santa Cruz County, Prunedale/Royal Oaks and North Salinas/Boronda Light Brown Apple Moth treatment areas that the original pheromone application schedule, November 4-9, has been delayed due to weather. As notices sent to residents indicated, please be aware treatment will continue on succeeding evenings, as necessary, so it is possible that treatments could occur on the evening of November 10, November 11 and beyond, depending on weather conditions. CDFA wishes to thank local residents and communities for their patience and cooperation during this period.

Also, it was reported in the press today that CDFA would not treat on Veterans Day, November 12. Please be aware that if the treatment is not completed by then and the weather is favorable, we would--in fact--treat that evening.

For Friday, November 9, weather permitting, CDFA will continue treatment in Santa Cruz County with pheromone application in portions of zones CASC 103, CASC 104, and CASC 105. Treatment in zones CASC 101, CASC 102 and CASC 106 are 100 percent completed.

Please see th link below for a map with more details about those zones.

Organizing activities planned for Sunday and Monday

I have gotten two responses to my request for information regarding people who have been made ill by the spraying but who can't afford to go to a doctor. One of these people has health insurance. (I would have had that opinion when I had health insurance too).

Sunday November 11: I will be in front of Bookshop Santa Cruz along with HUFF and the HRO. I will be there early with my own table from 10AM-2PM and will join them at their table from 2PM to close. I'm still looking for more people to come forward who want to claim an illness due to the spraying. I will have copies of the forms that the City of Santa Cruz has requested people have their doctor fill out to claim a pesticide injury. If you can't afford to see a doctor, we can work together on getting volunteer doctors to help us, simillar to the model employed by the WSW in Santa Cruz.

Monday November 12: I will have a table at the Santa Cruz City Hall along with the folks who are organizing an event to draw attention to the lawsuits against the Checkmate spraying. The event runs from 10AM-3PM

Footnote: Using the references at http://www.drrandy.org, together with my rusty back of the envelope chemistry calculations, it seems reasonable to expect a ground level concentration of up to 15 ppm of inert ingredients other than water due to the pesticide application. This assumes the inert ingredients other than water comprise 3% of the pesticide mix, as reported on drrandy.org. This takes the neurotoxicity question out of the realm of homeopathy and places it squarely in the realm of dose-response type biology. In other words, a reasonable classical cause-effect hypothesis exists for reported illnesses due to the spray, provided the individual concentrations of the chemicals in the inert ingredient list can be more firmly established.

What to do next:

Come to the rally in front of Santa Cruz City Hall 809 Center st Monday Nov 12, 2007 from 10AM-3PM.

Let us know if you have had any reactions due to the spray AND LET US KNOW IF YOU HAVE FOUND ANY DEAD BIRDS. We have one person who is saving a dead bird that died on Thursday night in Santa Cruz. We have an expert on tap who can give the bird a full post mortem analysis. If you have a dead bird, I'm not sure if it is a good idea to handle it yourself or to put in in a freezer along with food. But I was told to advise the one person who has a dead bird to freeze it if possible so we can examine it later. If you feel you must handle a dead bird, put it in a tupperware container to keep it dry and then put in in a separate ice chest with some ice or some of that dry ice that you can get at Safeway.
Then call 408-914-2751 or e-mail pagesincolor [at] aol.com. The guy with our dead bird also tried to call the County to handle this, but they refused to do anything.

It would be nice to get a more recent dead bird from the spraying of Salinas/Prunedale last night. So if you know anyone in that area of Monterey County who found a dead bird, please let us know.

If you want to have a doctor report your symptoms due to spray exposure but you don't have the cash to see a doctor you can

1) Go to the Emiline St Clinic in Building D and sign up for Medicruz or

2) Go to the Women's Health Clinic at 250 Locust St., Santa Cruz

Have a doctor there fill out the disease reporting form available on the City Of Santa Cruz Home Page at http://www.ci.santa-cruz.ca.us/ and send it to
