Media Democracy - Call to action!

by Mike Rhodes (MikeRhodes [at] Comcast.net)
The residents of Fresno have the opportunity to establish a Public Access channel in this community. The decision will be made in the next couple of weeks and this “Call to Action” is intended to get you (the reader) to contact your Fresno City Council member, in support of Public Access TV.
If you want Public Access TV in Fresno, the time to act is now. The decision on whether or not the City of Fresno will accept funding from Comcast for a Public Access channel will be made in the next week or two. The Fresno City Council is the body that will make this decision and that decision will probably be made at their Tuesday, November 27 meeting. If you support Free Speech and believe the public, nonprofit organizations, and community groups should have a voice on TV, you need to contact your city council member now. Contact information for the Fresno City Council is below.

For background information on this issue see: http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/10/24/18455824.php

The media landscape of the Fresno/Clovis area, for the next 10 or 20 years, will be determined by this decision. Your action or inaction in the next two weeks will determine whether corporate media dominates local TV or whether the public will have a voice. Tell the Fresno City Council that you support media democracy and the free exchange ideas in this community. Tell them you support the full 1% funding for Public, Education, and Government access. Let them know you understand the importance of establishing a Community Media Center in this area. Do it today!

For more information about the Community Media Access Collaborative, the group that is working to bring these resources to Fresno, see: http://www.cmacfresno.org/
