Santa Cruz Indymedia | Anti-War | Global Justice and Anti-CapitalismQuit Torture Teach-In & Vigil, aka CAMP BOLIO 2007, Nov. 16-18
November 16, 17, 18 What is the Quit Torture Teach-in & Vigil?
In November of 2006 a group of local activists gathered at the Pvt. Bolio Road entrance to the Presidio of Monterey for three days of signs and songs to draw attention to the issue of government complicity in the use of torture. They selected this location because the Presidio of Monterey is the home of the Defense Language Institute, and graduates from this facility may at times be called upon to act as interpreters in situations where a detainee is being mistreated, or tortured. They chose the dates in November so that Camp Bolio would run concurrent with the huge gathering at Fort Benning, Georgia, where activists protest the existence of the infamous School of the Americas, and the SOA's practice of instructing soldiers from other countries in the techniques of torture. The first Camp Bolio was so inspiring, invigorating, and fun, that participants demanded a repeat. This time will include a slate of speakers and activities. Although there are no fees, donations are welcome. Register by sending an email message to supportanactivist [at] redshift.com For more information on the issue of torture: Amnesty International USA http://www.amnestyusa.org School of the Americas Watch http://www.soawatch.org The Quaker Initiative to End Torture (QUIT) http://www.quit-torture-now.org
