PETITION: Act now to block Blackwater's mercenary base on the California border

by via couragecampaign.org
Urge Senator Feinstein and Senator Boxer to stand with us and the California Democratic Party to stop Blackwater and protect our security
Blackwater USA, the private right-wing mercenary army that has spiraled out of control in Iraq, is trying to set up a para-military base right here in California, populated by 360 staff and "students." They want to acquire 824 acres of land in a sleepy rural corner of San Diego County to build a mercenary training facility, consisting of 15 firing ranges, a helipad, and a heavy vehicle operator's course covering the equivalent of 10 football fields.

No way. No Blackwater. Not in California. Not in America.

That's the message that Senator Dianne Feinstein and Senator Barbara Boxer need to hear, loud and clear.

The security of California and our citizens is at stake. We hoped Senator Feinstein and Senator Boxer got the message when the Courage Campaign delivered 8,543 of your petition signatures to their offices. We hoped they got the message when the California Democratic Party passed a resolution -- putting the party on record -- opposing Blackwater's dangerous base on the border. We hoped they would take a stand with their party and with us. But we haven't heard a word.

It's time for our Senators to stand with us and the California Democratic Party against Blackwater.
§Take action now. Sign our letter and/or call Senators Feinstein and Boxer

Dear Senator Feinstein and Senator Boxer:

As you know, Blackwater USA is trying to open a massive mercenary base in California in a peaceful valley in San Diego County. The local community is absolutely opposed to Blackwater's base and yet they are moving forward without delay.

We need your help to stop Blackwater immediately.

This summer, the California Democratic Party passed a resolution at its Executive Board meeting that states unequivocally:

...that the California Democratic Party opposes the Blackwater West Project; and that all military, paramilitary, or related security/law enforcement training operations in California, whether private, governmental, or some combination of the two, should be conducted on, and only on, secured U.S. military bases or other established government-regulated facilities designed for that purpose.

Congressman Bob Filner (D-San Diego) followed suit by introducing a bill in the House last month consistent with this resolution.

Please follow Congressman Filner, your party and your constituents to help us block Blackwater's base.

Not only will Blackwater's proposed California paramilitary base disrupt the live of its residents, but it will also threaten the pristine natural habitat of the Round Potrero Valley, which includes part of Cleveland National Forest and is adjacent to the proposed Hauser Wilderness preserve. The regular detonation of firearms would be a risk both to the fire-prone landscape as well as to the wildlife that currently calls that area home, including the golden eagle and the California condor.

The time for deliberation is over. It's time for you to stand up to Blackwater.

Will you join the Courage Campaign and the California Democratic Party to protect our state's security before it's too late?

Thank you.
