NO MILITARY STRYKERS HAWAI’I ISLAND

by Lindafaye Kroll RN BSN
No Stryker Brigade here in Hawaii. “It is for urban warfare. It is possible in the future that these kinds of weapons could be used here against our own people.” Says Hilo resident about the Stryker Brigade build-up in Hawai’i.

No Stryker Brigade build-up in Hawai’i. Clean-up all live-fire artillery ranges.

The following public comments sent to the U.S. Army are reprinted here with permission.

I recognize the U.S. military is there to serve and protect this country, which to me means her people and the nation, the land itself.

What I am most frightened about is that the ways we are currently
using our military, from the land, sea and sky are not just a threat
to a country that is not now an ally, (but may have once been an
ally, or may become one some time in the future) but is a threat to
all life!

I am saying that the military in its zeal to have the greatest weaponry has harmed the lives of its own soldiers, as well as the unborn future generations of all life- plant and animal world wide.

I am not safer because America has powerful weapons. Each powerful weapon will invite someone to invent an even more powerful one. This is not how we protect our country.

In a world that is recognizably has limited resources, it makes greater sense not to waste oil by using it to fuel weapons and wars, not to pollute precious waters (land and sea) with all manner of chemicals that are a result of warfare or training for war. This is not how we protect our country or keep her people safe.

The military is right that it is here to protect us. It cannot do
that with a Stryker Brigade or low or high frequency sonar, or war.
It is not the way to be heroes or bring peace. Those ways lead to a
polluted world with people damaged in spiritual and physical health.

Conflict negotiation, true justice will, if basic needs such as
ability to feed oneself and live with dignity, without exploitation
is assured. I want our members of all branches of the military to be
required to attend mediation classes, nonviolent communication classes as part of their training.

I am so angry that we are told we have to give the military carte
blanch to do whatever it wants without concern for the environment
because it (the military) is there for our good. The military and
private contractors have squandered unaccounted for billions in the
name of our current wars.

America has got to stop participating in war, it creates more losing on both sides than it can create winning. War does not keep us safe, it does not stop oppression or injustice.

Depleted uranium is not going to do anybody any good any where!

I don’t want a Stryker Brigade here in Hawaii. It is for urban
warfare. It is possible in the future that these kinds of weapons
could be used here against our own people.

There certainly is enough evidence that militaries take over governments, attack people in their own countries and become the arm of oppression that guards the exploitive practices of those in power. They are probably just doing their job, as they see it.

Our military needs a new hero job. People would join in droves, or
decorate soldiers with leis and appreciation if they saved us from
invading alien species. Who better than the military to do these
difficult and dangerous tasks? The military appeals to our needs for
strength, valor, commitment.

Ridding America of alien invasive plants, animals, insects and reptiles requires those who are strong, organized, able to work as a team, the machos who really could scale the cliff to pull up the miconia that ordinary citizen cannot. These invasive alien species choke waterways, endanger forestry, agriculture, aquaculture and health. A country worth protecting is a country worth preserving.
