Hit the Streets for Health Care Now! SEIU Stand for Security-Rally and March

by Madeline Gardner (seiu.247.security [at] gmail.com)
Right now, private security officers are standing up against the corporate real estate industry to win quality, affordable health care for themselves and their families – just what every working family in California deserves. In the midst of this economic boom, no one should be left out in the cold. Join us as we fight for a good contract for security officers -- a predominately African American and immigrant workforce -- that will end the separate and unequal conditions and bring justice to all.
Rally and March
Thursday October 25th
4:30 PM: One Front Street, SF
(Embarcadero BART; Front St. and Market St.)

Everyone deserves quality, affordable health care…..

SF's corporate real estate giants are enjoying record breaking profits. Yet private security officers, over half of whom are African American, are earning poverty level wages. Security officers work full time protecting multibillion dollar properties but still have no respect, no affordable health care and earn only $24,000 a year on average -- about $5 an hour less than janitors. Other building service workers like janitors earn full family health care. There is a clear and unacceptable double standard within the corporate real estate industry.

Additionally, security officers have regularly experienced intimidation and discrimination on the job. To defend our rights, over 20 buildings went out on strike over 3 days at the end of September - the first strike among private security officers in the city's history. A strong message was sent to the corporate real estate industry during the strike as 150 Bay Area unions respected our pickets and supported our struggle for justice.

Even though we have been without a contract for over 100 days, the companies are still refusing to stop the double standards that keep private security officers in poverty. The security companies have told us that whatever contract we win in San Francisco will set the national standard for the entire industry. Our fight has the potential to affect the lives of hundreds of thousands of private security officers and their families all across the country. We will not rest until justice is won. Please join us this Thursday and march for quality, affordable health care for all working families.
