Fujimori held by Peru authorities
Sunday, September 23, 2007 : Former president extradited from Chile to face human rights and corruption charges.
Fujimori's followers showed their support for the former leader as he returned to Peru [Reuters] Alberto Fujimori, the former president of Peru, has been taken into police custody, after he returned to the capital to face charges of corruption and human rights violations. An aircraft carrying the former leader landed at a Lima airforce base, one day after a court in Chile ruled that he should be extradited. Armed guards flanked the aircraft, from where Fujimori was taken to a police base while he awaits a trial that could result in a 30-year sentence. Al Jazeera's Mariana Sanchez in Lima said Fujimori's return has provoked mixed reactions. Flag-waving supporters, hoping he will escape a lengthy sentence and mount a political comeback, cheered his arrival at a Lima airport. However his critics were delighted that justice would finally be served.Read More
