Fujimori extradited from Chile
Saturday, September 22, 2007 : Peru's former president leaves Santiago to face human rights and corruption charges.
Fujimori has been living under house arrest in Chile since he arrived in November 2005 [AFP] Alberto Fujimori, the former president of Peru, has been taken by helicopter to a Chilean airport, from where he will be extradited to face charges of corruption and human rights violations in his home country.
Fujimori, who ruled Peru between 1990 and 2000, has been under house arrest in Chile since November 2005.
Chile's Supreme Court ruled on Friday that Fujimori should be sent back to Peru to face charges that include ordering the death-squad killings of 25 people.
Fujimori, who calls the charges politically motivated, said on Saturday that while his government made mistakes, his conscience is clear.
"This does not mean that I've been tried, much less convicted. ... I hope that in Peru there exists the due process to clarify the accusations against me," he told the Chilean newspaper El Mercurio on Saturday.
