The Silicon Valley Impeachment Coalition (SVIC) and friends met with Meri Maben, Mike Honda's District Director, on August 27th in Campbell, CA. Mike Honda is the "representative" in the US House of Representatives from the 15th District of California (San Jose, Campbell, Los Gatos, Gilroy, Cupertino, Milpitas, Santa Clara).

Ms. Maben was presented with a letter from the SVIC including the following questions:
1) WHY ARE YOU CONTINUING TO SUPPORT AN ILLEGAL WAR OF INVASION AND OCCUPATION BASED ON FABRICATION AND LIES?

2) DESPITE THEIR SEIZURE OF UNCHECKED EXECUTIVE POWER THAT IS EXPRESSLY FORBIDDEN BY THE CONSTITUTION, WHY DO YOU CONTINUE THE DE FACTO PARDON OF CHENEY AND BUSH BY TABLING IMPEACHMENT? WHY ARE YOU JEOPARDIZING THE FUTURE OF OUR REPUBLIC BY YOUR SILENCE?

3) WHAT MORE WOULD CHENEY AND BUSH HAVE TO DO IN ORDER FOR YOU TO SUPPORT THE ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT?

In response to whether or not Honda was going to co-sponsor HR 333, Kucinich's bill of impeachment of Veep Dick Cheney, Meri Maben stated that Honda will not sign on for impeachment. Her reasons were that Honda is a Democratic party man and would follow the lead of the party leadership. Gloria Chan, Honda's DC counsel, said that she thought Honda would say that Cheney had committed impeachable offenses and that he should be impeached in a moral sense but not in a legal sense.

Meri Maben spent considerable time trying to sell us on the achievements of the Democratic Congress: Minimum wage legislation, CHIPs legislation, Congressional oversight, the Pat Tillman investigation, pressure on the Executive leading to the resignations of Rumsfeld, Rove and Gonzales. We wondered if she had not heard us; that we are concerned about the fate of our rights under the Constitution, of the Republic, of the nation.

The price for selling us out to corporate interests appears to be a small raise in the minimum wage, more government health care programs, some oversight of the least blatant violations of the criminals in the US government and no allegiance to the Congressional oath of office to uphold and defend the Constitution. The Constitution clearly calls for impeachment given the magnitude of the BushCo. crimes.

We left the meeting feeling like we had driven our message into Honda's staff. We left committed to work for the impeachment of the criminals in the White House and beyond.
