STAFF HIGHLIGHT

ERICKA'S EXAMPLE OF CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

Hi, fellow grassroots leaders!

As part of this month's newsletter, I am glad to share with you my involvement in the community beyond my work at the Grassroots Leadership Network.

I am currently serving on the Marin Institute's Board of Directors and on the Marin Women's Commission.

The Marin Institute is a national non-profit organization working as an alcohol industry watchdog and a resource for solutions to community alcohol problems. I am excited to be able to support and learn from their work on environmental prevention and support to community action.

The Marin Women's Commission is a County Commission serving an advisory role to the Board of Supervisors. The Marin Women's Commission advocates for equity and parity, diversity, self- sufficiency, leadership, and access to resources to enhance the quality of life for Marin County women at all stages of life.

Both organizations' missions are aligned with the work we do at GLN and my personal interests. If you would like to know more about the work of these institutions, you can visit the Marin Institute and Marin Women's Commission website by clicking on the quick link on the upper left of this newsletter, or contact me at ericka [at] maringrassroots.org or (415) 451-4350 x 303.

I hope that you get inspired and also step up to serve our community by participating in local Board and Commissions!

Ericka Erickson

USSF 2007 REPORT AT GRASSROOTS COUNCIL MEETING

Ericka will be reporting back about the U.S. Social Forum 2007 at this month's Grassroots Council meeting. She will be presenting a slide show and leading a dialogue about what she learned at this historical event.

The August Grassroots Council meeting will be held at the Pickleweed Park Community Center (50 Canal St. San Rafael) on Thursday, August 30th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

TENANTS ORGANIZING

Applications Are Being Accepted for the Tenants' Voice Council

The Grassroots Leadership Network of Marin has been coordinating the Marin Tenants Organizing Project to promote leadership and provide a voice for the underrepresented on housing policies.

Through the Marin Tenants' Organizing Project, the Tenants' Voice Working Group has been meeting on A monthly basis. As a result of their regular meetings, the group has come up with the structure and application process for the "Tenants' Voice Council." The Council will support the organizing of renters to develop public policies that will affect tenants' issues in Marin.

If you would like to request an application and/or participate in the regular monthly meetings please call Olivia Beltran, Tenants Organizing Coordinator at (415) 451-4350 Ext. 306. The applications submission deadline is October 31, 2007.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT CAMPAIGN

Grassroots Leadership Network announces its 10th Annual Civic Engagement Campaign "Equal Voices for Healthy Communities!"

Marin residents and community-based organizations are getting together to organize the 10th Annual Civic Engagement Campaign, "Equal Voices for Healthy Communities!" This campaign is aimed at increasing the civic involvement of underserved communities and, therefore, the residents' ability to influence decisions that affect their community, including policy- making, resource allocation and access to public goods and services. This year we will be expanding the campaign to not only focus our events through the November 2007 election, but to continue to work towards building power for our communities as we look to Election Day 2008. The campaign will include:
Voter Registration and Education Drives
Community Dialogues and Actions
Candidates and Issues Forums
Community Collaborative
Much more...

If you are interested in joining the campaign or would like more information contact Steve Burdo at 415- 451- 4350 ext 301 or by email at Stephen [at] maringrassroots.org
